Looking Inside Ourselves

About This Section

Looking Inside Ourselves challenges us to confront an uncomfortable truth. The world’s problems aren’t just “out there.” They’re rooted in the way we live our lives. We’re all part of the problem, and we can all be part of the solution. Becoming more self-aware is a vital first step.

Confronting the Truth About Ourselves

Our Egos: Not Always Our Friends

It’s no secret. We all like to be right. And the stronger our egos, the more likely we insist that we are in fact right.

But clearly, we can’t always be right, and too often, because of our unchecked egos, we fail to see the truth of a matter.

Our egos are useful in helping to define us as unique manifestations. But if they take over, they end up creating barriers to our growth. And in doing so, they can do more harm than good.

There’s something to be said for having strong egos. Otherwise, not much would likely get done. But, there’s also something to be said for being honest about whether or not they’ve taken control of our lives.

If they have, looking inside ourselves for how to get them back in line, would be a smart thing to do.

Small Things We Can Do

Two men engaged in a serious conversation indoors.
  • Listen when someone challenges your position. Avoid the temptation to feel defensive.
  • When you do feel defensive, reflect on why.
  • Avoid making automatic responses to issues based on your preconceived biases.
  • Don’t let your ego get in the way of making better choices.
